of the artist
Jack
Fancher has pursued careers in both both art and science.
While enjoying a very interesting and satisfying career in
oceanography he studied drawing, painting and photography.
He has studied various kinds of visual arts, at the Corcoran
School of Art in Washington, D.C. and with many private instructors
and in workshops. Retiring after 34 years as an Oceanographer
Jack has become a full time artist, and continues to study
with regionally and nationally known artists.
Although
he began painting with oils in the 1960s, watercolor has become
his medium of choice because of its luminous and transparent
qualities. It is a creative challenge to define a subject in
a painting while not making a photocopy. Land- and marine- scapes
appeal most to Jack, whether representational or abstract.
Jack's
interest in photography has covered five decades, during which
he has studied and practiced this art form. His photographs
have been included in college yearbooks, science CDs, in photography
exhibits and juried shows.
His
artwork has appeared in numerous shows on the Eastern Shore,
and is in private collections from coast to coast. Jack's work
can regularly be seen at the Rock Hall Gallery in Rock Hall,
MD, where he lives and paints.
Jack
is a juried member of the Working Artists Forum, past president
of the Chestertown Arts League and a member of the Chesapeake
College Art Advisory Committee.
